The Magnuson-Stevens Act and the Keep Fishermen Fishing Ralley in Washington


On Wednesday March 21, 2012 both commercial and recreational  fishermen from across the United States stood at the Capitial to Keep  Fishermen Fishing. Congressmen and Senators spoke about supporting  America’s fisheries and the Magnuson-Stevens Act that regulates them.

The Magnuson-Stevens Act was intended to keep foreign  fishing vessels at least two-hundred miles from United States shorelines and  stop the exploitation., to support internal fisheries, to promote fishing  follwoing conservation principles, establishing regional fishing stewardship  that will monitor according to the states social and economic needs, develop  underutilized fisheries, and protect habitats. The Act itself has been ammended  many times over the years with the main purpose being to end overfishing.
