Mussels monitor Georgia waters for the fisherman

Invasive Zebra MusselsFreshwater Mollusks, Unionids, also called fluviatile mollusks, they have become the most imperiled group of animals due to the polluted and wastewater that is dumped into the rivers annually, 13 species are listed in the Endangered Species Act as of 2003. Georgia has the largest mussel collection (80%) per capita of anywhere else in the United States over 300 live here.  The Eastern United States boasts the best freshwater mussel populations in the world.   What do mussels do, they filter the waters and Georgia was once a huge thriving wetland.
